Volunteering

Becoming a Volunteer

Becoming a volunteer is a great way to connect with people who care about creating a positive, comforting experience for patients, families and staff while at the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Volunteers are an integral and valued part of everything we do.  Over 15,000 volunteer hours are logged each year at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Our volunteers help us in the Gift Shop, maintain our Lightcourt and Oncology Gardens and assist with Patient Comfort Programs such as the Oncology Coffee Cart, purchasing, wrapping and delivering Christmas gifts and packaging and delivering baby hats to name a few.  Our Board of Directors are also all volunteers!

Volunteering can be very rewarding and it takes a special person to be one:

  • Commitment to customer service
  • Self-motivated and self-directed
  • Excellent judgment and diplomacy skills
  • Active listening skills
  • Comfortable in a fast paced environment and approaching others to offer assistance
  • Able to stand/walk for 3-4 hours
  • Strong sense of commitment, able to consistently demonstrate excellent attendance

Volunteers are also required to attend a hospital orientation on security, confidentiality, infectious disease control, fire and safety, and general policies. As well, new volunteers will be required to take on the job training relevant to the position you are volunteering for.
